“What I Eat in a Day” videos have quickly become a hot topic in popular social media platforms. This trend attracts millions of people seeking meal ideas, health advice, and a sense of belonging or relatableness. What might initially seem like a harmless and appropriate trend, has become very controversial due to its impact on viewers and their relationship with food. By posting a set of videos or pictures of one’s daily food and caloric intake, “What I Eat in a Day” videos unwittingly promote certain food expectations and ideas.

For individuals already struggling with disordered eating, certain “What I Eat in a Day” videos can reinforce unhealthy eating habits. Comparison can come very naturally for someone who already has a complicated relationship with their body image or food. Creators will throw in popular phrases in their “What I Eat in a Day” videos, such as, “What works for my body, might not work for yours”, or “Everyone is different”, to try to minimize criticism of their unhealthy food intake, but individuals with disordered eating look straight past that, and will fixate on portion sizes, food items, and body sizes. This can result in feelings of shame and an urge to continue or intensify restriction of caloric intake. According to a recent article, regular exposure to eating-related content through social media platforms has been associated with unhealthy eating patterns and body dissatisfaction.

At the same time, “What I Eat in a Day” videos can be seen as a helpful tool and a source of motivation for recovery. Many creators who post healthy “What I Eat in a Day” videos encourage individuals to fuel their bodies with multiple meals and snacks a day, enjoy social events, and find a balance between nutritious and comforting foods. This specific content can be a great outlet to provide a safe space for individuals struggling with disordered eating. One of the ways a viewer can identify if a “What I Eat in a Day” video is helpful is by looking for creators who refrain from discussing their weight, body size, or feelings of shame and guilt related to certain food choices. Instead, they will focus on adequate fuel, satisfaction, and self-love, regardless of their dietary choices. This side of the same coin will provide the viewers with a very healthy approach on food and body nourishment.

It is crucial to be mindful of the content we are consuming and interacting with, and intentionally fill our algorithm with beneficial and encouraging content. While “What I Eat in a Day” videos have gained the power to influence how we view and feel about food and our bodies, it is important to remember that each individual has different nutritional needs and goals. Eating is an extremely nuanced and complex experience that will differ from each person, so finding a sustainable balance takes time, and trial and error. Proper food and caloric intake to nourish the body is not a trend nor is it optional for a healthy lifestyle.
